Optimistic Driver Fails to Turn Back Tide, Needs Rescuing by The RNLI

HOLY ISLAND CAUSEWAY, UK

The RNLI have released video showing a driver and passenger who needed rescuing after becoming stranded on the Holy Island Causeway.

The couple who needed help were travelling towards the mainland when their car got into trouble on the notorious road at around 3:30pm on Sunday.

The causeway, which is submerged twice a day by high tides, is the only land connection between Lindisfarne and the British mainland. The island is popular with tourists, home to around 180 residents and Lindisfarne Castle.

So far this year, the Coastguard has been called out to rescue people cut off by the tides in April, May and July.

Seahouses RNLI issued the following statement: ‘It is believed that the couple had attempted to cross the Causeway which was unsafe between 2.05pm and 9.10pm that day. The couple were then handed into the care of local coastguard officers on the shore.

‘Their car was abandoned on the Causeway, to be recovered later when the tide receded, but is highly likely to be totally written off, and may not be covered by insurance due to the driver’s possible negligence.’
