Spare a thought for this poor woman, who hates them so much that she wrote off her car when one dropped down from her inside mirror.

She told police that she lost control when the arachnid appeared inside her gold Toyota sedan, sending the vehicle skidding into a ditch at the side of the road.

‘Spider season in full swing,’ the local sheriff force noted on Twitter, not especially sympathetically.

Thankfully, the woman was not hurt in the crash – although we doubt it has done anything for her arachnophobia.

The crash happened in the Bonny Slope area of Portland, Oregon, yesterday morning.

Police closed off one lane of the road to make sure everything was safe following the accident.

However, there was no sign of the spider when police investigated and it is believed to still be at large.
