The Lao National Commission for the Advancement of Women is working to achieve gender equality by 2030 in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
Gender equality is one of 17 Global Goals that make up the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The Lao government is promoting the advancement of women and gender equality in an effort to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women via a seminar held last Thursday in Vientiane Capital for local media under the theme “Promoting the Advancement of Women.”
The seminar drew journalists from radios, televisions, magazines and newspapers in Vientiane Capital.
Head of Secretariat of the National Commission for the Advancement of Women, Ms Chansoda Phonthip said that the plan is in accordance with Vision 2030 for gender equality.
The objective of the seminar was to disseminate to representatives of local media a draft to implement Vision 2030, the next ten-year national strategy for gender equality from 2016-2025, and the national action plan for gender equality from 2016-2020, Ms Chansoda added.
Gender equality is crucial to balanced and inclusive economic growth and social development. While Laos has been experiencing impressive economic growth, more work needs to be done in gender equality. Inequality continues to exist in educational and therefore, work opportunities. Men account for the majority of civil servants, professionals, technicians and other sectors.
Ms Chansoda called on the participants to continue spread out the action plan for gender equality to the general public to ensure that the plan will be put into practice so that all forms of violence and discrimination against women and girls can be eliminated.
In addition, participants were provided with information on women’s rights, gender equality, the sustainable development plan, the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms Discrimination against Women, and the law aiming to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women.
These plans were approved by the government at the beginning of this year.
