Essential oils are often used in aromatherapy or to freshen up the laundry. But did you know that using the right combination of essential oils can help disinfect the air in your home?

It might seem like keeping your windows closed is the best way to keep air pollutants out of your home, but doing this can cause respiratory problems or put your immune system at risk from indoor allergens.

Air quality in your home may diminish due to poor ventilation, which can then compromise your immune system. Fresh air helps your immune system fight off diseases more effectively.

Fresh air also supplies your immune system with the oxygen it needs to kill and destroy bacteria, viruses and germs. It also helps boost your white blood cell count. Essential oils work because they contain compounds that help protect plants from mold and bacteria.

Essential oils that can help improve indoor air quality

Different essential oils are classified as antibacterial, antimicrobial and antiviral.

These antibacterial essential oils can help prevent antibacterial resistant diseases:

Basil

Cassia

Cinnamon

Clove

Cypress

Eucalyptus

Geranium

Lavender

Lemon

Marjoram

Melaleuca

Myrrh

Orange

Oregano

Peppermint

Rosemary

Tea Tree

Thyme

These antimicrobial essential oils can help protect you from germs that cause diseases:

Cinnamon

Eucalyptus

Geranium

Lavender

Lemon

Melaleuca

Ravensara

Rosemary

Thyme

These antiviral essential oils have been found to help prevent viral infections:

Basil

Cassia

Cinnamon

Eucalyptus

Frankincense

Lemon

Lemongrass

Marjoram

Melaleuca

Myrrh

Oregano

Thyme

3 Ways to disinfect the air at home with essential oils

Disinfecting the air at home isn’t really that difficult or expensive if essential oils are available. You can either use a diffuser, a purifying room spray or Lampe Berger.

Diffuser

Diffusers utilize the healing properties of essential oils by breaking them down into smaller molecules and dispersing them into the air for a pleasant or calming effect. Using a diffuser may help improve and balance your moods.

A diffuser can also create a healthier environment by naturally purifying the air with healing essential oils.

If you have a diffuser at home, try the air-purifying essential oil blend below.

You will need:

10 drops tangerine oil

5 drops eucalyptus oil

5 drops lemongrass oil

5 drops tea tree oil

Purifying room spray

Use specific essential oil combinations to make a spritzing room spray that will help purify the air and freshen up any room.

You’ll need vodka to make the room spray last for months. Vodka acts as a natural preservative and disinfectant. If you don’t have vodka, you can also use witch hazel, which contains some alcohol (usually around 18 percent).

You will need:

Distilled water

Vodka or witch hazel

10 drops eucalyptus essential oil

10 drops lavender essential oil

10 drops lemongrass essential oil

10 drops peppermint essential oil

Preparation:

Fill an eight-ounce glass spray bottle 3/4 full with distilled water.

Fill the bottle 1/4 full with vodka.

Add the essential oils to the spray bottle.

Before using, shake the bottle to incorporate the essential oils. Spray the mixture upwards to disinfect the air.

Lampe Berger

The Lampe Berger is considered “the oldest and most effective way to remove bacteria and odors from the air you breathe.”

The original Lampe Berger lamp was designed in France in 1898 by Maurice Berger, a pharmaceutical dispenser. The lamp was made to be used in hospitals to help eliminate airborne bacteria and fight sepsis.

A Lampe Berger works by burning oil very slowly via a catalytic converter (no flame). The device is said to kill 67 percent of all bacteria in your air and helps get rid of odor-causing molecules in the air through the process of catalytic oxidation. As a result, a Lampe Berge increases oxygen levels in the room to help fight disease.

Fragrances are available, but they can be expensive. To save a bit of money, make your own using essential oils.

Use a Lampe Berger if someone is sick at home and you want to help them get better faster.

You will need:

16 ounces 90 percent isopropyl alcohol

2 drops each of eucalyptus, lavender, lemongrass, rosemary and tea tree oils

Lampe Berger

Preparation:

Add 16 ounces of isopropyl alcohol to a glass jar, then add 10 drops of assorted essential oils to the bottle.

Secure the top and shake the bottle well.

Fill the Lampe Berger with the mixture. Set it aside to allow the wick to absorb liquid for up to 20 minutes.

To use the Lampe Berger, light the wick with a lighter and let it burn for two minutes.

Blow out the flame. If you still have heat after five minutes you did everything right. If not, you have too much oil in the Lampe Berger.

If you haven’t burned a Lampe Berger in your home before or within several days, burn the Lampe Berger for one hour for every 600 square feet.

When using a Lampe Berger, remember that isopropyl alcohol is extremely flammable. Always be present in the room when using a Lampe Berger to prevent accidental fires.
