Anti Smoking Campaign Held at Sayyidina Husain Secondary School

Sayyidina Husain Secondary School, Mukim Sengkurong hosted a launching ceremony for the Stop Smoking campaign for its students; organised by the Health Promotion Centre, Ministry of Health.
Present as guest of honour was Awang Salim bin Adi, Village Head of Kampong Lugu/Katimahar.
Also present were Dr. Ernie Nisdzarinah binti Haji Abdul Rani, Senior Officer at the Health Promotion Centre; Officers from the Health Promotion Centre; Deputy Principal of the school, Dayang Hajah Juridah binti Haji Tamin; teachers; parents and students.
The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah led by Ustaz Husin bin Liman and resumed with an opening speech by the deputy principal.
Present as the guest speaker was Dayang Hajah Mahanum binti Dato Haji Abu Zar, a Health Promotion Officer from the Ministry of Health who delivered a lecture about the dangers of smoking and 'vaping'.
The campaign seeks to create awareness and educate about the dangers of smoking. Smoking is a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases.
It was highlighted that the number of surveys and monitoring of students' health conducted by the Ministry of Health have shown some aspects of the practice of unhealthy lifestyles, including smoking.
A total of 2,599 high school students (aged 13-17) were selected at random to participate in the survey 'Global School Health Survey (GSFIS) 2014' conducted by the Health Promotion Centre.
The findings of the survey showed that 11.4 per cent of teens smoke tobacco once or more in the past month.
The survey also found that 12.3 per cent of adolescents use tobacco products either once or more during the past month.
