Over the past 5 years, technology utilisation in the country's agriculture and fisheries sector had shown a positive uptake. Hence, entrepreneurs and farmers in the agriculture and fisheries sectors, who are yet to adopt the use of technology should come forward and explore the use of technology advancement in those sectors. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Borneo International Conference on Agrotechnology, BICAT 2022 yesterday morning, held in conjunction with the Brunei MYCE 2022, the Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism siad that with the use of technology, agriculture and fisheries sector recorded a positive growth.
In the crop industry, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Paduka Doctor Awang Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin, Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism said the introduction of Japanese Musk Melon produced in greenhouses with automated fertigation system has increased production for export market. Meanwhile in the aquaculture industry, the introduction of new shrimp species known as Vannamei shrimp has increased marine shrimp production worth 38 million dollars in 2021.
Earlier, Professor Doctor Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, Vice Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Brunei, UTB said UTB currently offers undergraduate degree programmes in agrotechnology with minor in business and food science and technology.
With the theme 'Technology for Agriculture 4.0', BICAT 2022 is the first conference in agrotechnology. Organised by UTB, the conference creates a stage for exchanging technology developments in agriculture. It provides an opportunity for researchers, practitioners, and educators to take part and discuss recent innovations as well as practical challenges encountered in the fields of agrotechnology.
