AUSTRALIA

A bulk carrier that’s been stranded off the coast of Sydney for three days in ferocious weather has reached port as wild conditions that caused widespread flooding eased.

The MV Portland Bay and its 21 crew was towed into Port Botany in the city’s south by tugboats on Wednesday afternoon. Marine pilots had earlier boarded the ship to guide it into safe waters.

The rescue came after several failed attempts in huge swell during recent days. The 170-meter vessel was carrying about 1,000 tonnes of fuel oil, the Sydney Morning Herald reported, raising concerns of a possible ecological disaster should the ship crash into the rocky coastline of the nearby Royal National Park.
