The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) refused to join a special team formed by the police to investigate a fatal shootout between two police officers, instead choosing to form its own team to maintain independence.

The National Police chief Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo said on Tuesday that he would invite Komnas HAM to assist a special team led by National Police deputy chief Comr. Gen. Gatot Eddy Pramono involving members of the National Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) and General Supervision Inspectorate (Irwasum).

Komnas HAM commissioner Choirul Anam said on Thursday that Komnas HAM would carry out a separate investigation to ensure its independence in uncovering the truth of the fatal incident.
