The 11th ASEAN Skills Competition (ASC) official opened last Friday at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre in Malaysia and is scheduled to take place from Sept 24-28.

Fourteen competitors from Laos will be competing in seven categories including masonry, carpentry, electric, welding, the culinary arts, tailoring and automatic machinery control.

The ASC is held every two years and is the biggest vocational education and skills event in the ASEAN region that truly reflects global industry.

The competitors represent the best of their peers and are selected from skills competitions in ASEAN Member countries and regions.

They demonstrate technical abilities, both individually and collectively, to execute specific tasks for which they study and/or perform in their workplace.

One of the main legacies of the ASEAN Skills Competition is to give visibility and importance to professional education as one of the true tools of socio-economic transformation.

The competition also provides leaders in industry, government and education with the opportunity to exchange information and best practices regarding industry and professional education.

New ideas and processes inspire school-aged youth to dedicate themselves to technical and technological careers for a better future.

The competition is held to promote and upgrade skill standards in the region and consequently to an international standard and is organized on a cost-sharing basis. To date there are 10 participating countries and 21 skill areas.

The objectives of the ASEAN Skills competition are: to promote the development of quality vocational, technical, and work values among the youth and skilled workers, to foster technical cooperation in vocational/technical education and training between member countries, to encourage close cooperation among government, industries, employers, workers’ organizations and vocational training institutes.

ASC will pave the way for work excellence and the development of high skilled workers.

ASC is an activity where ASEAN member countries can cooperate and work together at a regional level in terms of skill development in order to achieve competency to an international standard. The rules of the competition are as follows: the competition will be held every two years and the members countries will take turns hosting the event by voting resolutions.

Test project elements reflect the latest technology and skills needed and are amended before each competition. Thus, using the World Skill Test as a basis for developing ASC test projects, the youth of ASEAN members countries will have the ability to stay up to date with the world.
