INDONESIA

Customs officials arrested two Malaysian men upon arrival in Kualanamu International Airport (KNIA) in Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, for carrying illegal drugs on Wednesday.

KNIA customs chief Elfi Haris said that officials found 7 grams crystal meth, one g of ketamine, 5 nimetazepam “happy five” pills and 15 pills containing meth in their possession.

“The contrabands were hidden in a plastic bag within their luggage,” Elfi said.

The foreign nationals were only identified by initials and age: 36-year-old ENI and 38-year-old MN.

Local National Narcotics Agency (BNN) eradication division chief Sr. Comr. Sempana Sitepu said the men would be charged for drug trafficking under the 2009 Narcotics Law, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

The Southeast Asia region has among the harshest anti-narcotics laws in the world.

Eight of the 35 countries that still retain the death penalty for drug offenses are in Southeast Asia and were responsible for a staggering 91.5 percent of all confirmed death sentences given for drug offenses worldwide, according to the Global Review 2021 from Harm Reduction International (HRI).

In Indonesia, all 14 convicted drug offenders who were executed in 2015 and 2016 were foreign nationals. (dre)
