SARAVAN, LAOS
“Mak phao naxay, pingkai napong, lao khao meuang khong, lamvong saravane” is the slogan of Saravan Province which has an abundance of natural resources like an utterance told since time immemorial that “Such a poor Saravane can sell elephant for a torch” which means that even though Saravan is poor, it can sell an elephant for a torch.
Saravan is located in the southern part of Laos. It partly covers the Bolaven Plateau, one of the most fertile areas in the country. The province has 8 districts namely Saravanh, Lakhonepheng, Vapi, Laongam, Toumlan, Taoy, Khongsedon and Samuay. Its population is around 300,000 represented by 14 ethnic groups.
Saravan is culturally rich and this is reflected in folksongs, especially a very famous Saravan with nationwide popularity, Khongsedon, Phouthai, Talymone, Kaleui, among others.
Saravan is also famous for its cuisines especially Napong chicken grills. Visitors are recommended to buy it whenever they visit the province; otherwise visiting the province is meaningless.
Ongkeo Memorial Park – Khen Park
Ongkeo Statue is a public place in which the deeds of Ongkeo, the Lao national hero are inscribed. His bravery is exemplified by his leading of the Lao people in fighting with French power. Ongkeo was born in Chakam village, Tateng district and died on Nov 12, 1910. The statue of Ongkeo stands 8.6 m tall (including the statue and foundation).
Tad Loh – Tad Hang
Tad Loh is located in Senvang village, Saravane district. It is around 31 KM from Saravane city. It was discovered in 1985 and opened to the public officially in 1990. The term “Tad Loh” is from the word “Lo”, a dialect of a local minority, which means man’s sexual organ. A folktale was that two sisters challenged an old man to jump into this waterfall by promising him that they will marry him if he dared to jump. The old man then undressed and his lo – sexual organ - was seen hanging loose and he jumped into the water and remained submerged for awhile. The two sisters thought he had died but luck belonged to the old man. He didn’t drown. His head later emerged from the water safely. Eventually, the two sisters had to keep their promise – marrying the old man.
