Dr M: Strange That Apandi Remains Unpunished Over 1MDB

 October 26th, 2022  |  11:54 AM  |   493 views

PETALING JAYA

Former attorney general Tan Sri Apandi Ali should be investigated for allegedly helping to cover up the 1MDB scandal, says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (pic).

In a video shared on his Twitter on Tuesday (Oct 25), the former prime minister described the matter as “strange”.

“I feel it is very strange that no investigation or action has been taken against Apandi until now.

“Apandi did wrong when he was attorney-general before Tommy Thomas.

“The mistake of releasing (former PM) Datuk Seri Najib Razak from any legal action clearly shows that he was involved in covering up the 1MDB scandal, given that Najib is now in prison,” he said.

Apandi replaced Abdul Gani Patail as AG in 2015 and was in the post for three years before Thomas replaced him in 2018.

Dr Mahathir also cited High Court judge Datuk Azimah Omar’s written judgment on May 23, 2022, that rejected the former AG’s defamation suit against DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang.

“Even high court judge Datuk Azimah Omar on May 23, in her 100-page judgment, dismissed Apandi's defamation suit against Lim Kit Siang.

“Judge Azimah has concluded that Apandi, among other things, is a person who does not tell the truth, (and) failed to perform his duties as the AG.

“There is a basis for investigation because he is suspected of abetting and protecting the crime of 1MDB,” he said.

He said that Justice Azimah (in her judgment) also expressed the court's disgust at how despicable Apandi's contradictory, evasive and blatantly fraudulent statements were.

“Following the statement (judgment by) Judge Azimah, many police reports were made against Apandi but until now, no action has been taken.

“On the other hand, the government gave millions of ringgit in compensation to Apandi because the previous government had terminated his service for failing to carry out his duties,” he lamented.
