VIENTIANE

(KPL) Australian Government has provided humanitarian relief supplies to Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare of Laos to prepare for an emergency.

The handover ceremony was held at the Wattay International Airport on Oct 26, Australian Ambassador Paul Kelly handed over pre-positioned humanitarian supplies valued at AUD 300,000 to the Deputy Minister for Labour and Social Welfare, Mr. Padermphone Sonthany.

The event also attended by Commodore Allison Norris, Director General Estate Service Delivery, Wing Commander Lauren McHardy, Australian Defence Attachè to Laos and the delegation.

The delivery of these humanitarian supplies by the Australian Defence Force is part of an Australian whole of government initiative which supports defence cooperation with countries in the region, including Laos.

Australia is pleased to support the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare to prepare for emergency response in the event of natural disasters. Having relief supplies positioned will help the Ministry respond quickly and effectively support affected populations to recover from disasters. The supplies include kitchen kits, bed nets, blankets, sleeping mats, hygiene kits, and solar lights for 560 families, which will benefit approximately 2,800 people.

Australia continues to support the Lao Government in humanitarian and emergency response and recovery through our development cooperation program.
