Several supermarkets and retail stores in Kampong Jerudong and Kampong Sengkurong were found not displaying the net weight marks on packaged products, such as vegetables, fruit, dry food and raw goods. The findings were the result of a recent joint operation by the Weights and Measures Unit, SDT, Industry and Business Ecosystem Division with the Employees' Trust Fund, TAP; Brunei Muara District Office and the Department of Labour, Ministry of Home Affairs.
The supermarkets and grocery stores also displayed weight marks that are not consistent with the weight marks written on each package. The management and the packing workers have shared the proper packing and weighing procedures. SDT also seized a unit of weighing equipment that was not registered and used for trading purposes. The companies were given a Seizure Notice and required to appear at the SDT Unit Office within 7 days from the date the notice was issued.
Meanwhile, 2 employees at 2 companies were found to have not yet registered with TAP. The Brunei Muara District Office also issued 2 compound fines on Usahaneka Ira Maya amounting to $1000 and Cally-Laila Management Services, amounting to $500 for offences related to disposing rubbish at public places.
Three companies were found to have committed an offence under Chapter 112 1 which is employing workers without a licence from the Labour Commissioner and Chapter 112 2 for violating the term of hiring foreign workers. 1 foreign worker was found working without a licence, while nine foreign workers were carrying out work different to that stipulated as their designated positions.
