More than 31,000 outbound passengers and 27,000 inbound passengers were monitored by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in various ports nationwide as of noontime of Christmas Day on Sunday, Dec. 25.

Data from the PCG showed that from 6 a.m. to 12 noon, a total of 31,314 outbound passengers and 27,007 inbound passengers passed through different seaports across the country.

Many of the passengers were going to their home provinces to celebrate Christmas Day and enjoy the extended holiday weekend with their families.

Earlier, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared Dec. 26 as a special non-working holiday to allow Filipinos to have a “full opportunity to celebrate the holiday with their families and loved ones.”

To ensure that all port passengers will be safe and secured, the PCG said it deployed 2,472 frontline personnel in 15 Coast Guard districts who inspected 187 vessels and 362 motorboats.

From Dec. 15 until Jan. 7 next year, the PCG would be implementing a heightened alert in all of its districts, stations, and sub-stations across the country to manage the influx of port passengers during the Yuletide season.
