CENTRAL HALMAHERA, NORTH MALUKU
A fire that broke out on Friday at a nickel smelter in Central Halmahera on Halmahera Island, North Maluku, had injured at least seven workers, according to local police.
The fire started in Smelter L at PT Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP), injuring five local and two foreign workers. All seven were taken to H. Chasan Boesoeri Ternate General Regional Hospital for treatment.
“Two of them sustained severe injuries,” Central Halmahera Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Moh. Zulfikar Iskandar told The Jakarta Post on Friday.
He added that police were still investigating the incident.
The Weda Bay industrial park is a national strategic project designed to expand domestic capacity in nickel ore processing, since the government started banning exports of unprocessed ore in 2020.
The IWIP is managed under a Chinese joint venture between the Tsingshan Group, Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt Co. Ltd. and Zhenshi Holding Group Co. Ltd. (dre)
