BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
Meragang Sixth Form Centre (PTEM) Team 1 emerged victorious yesterday, at the Fifth National Malay Debate competition, for pre-university students.
Eight teams from seven schools participated in the tournament, which was jointly organised by the Information Department and the Ministry of Education's Co-Curriculum Education Department.
The finals pitted PTEM and Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (MSPSBS), in a show of debating skills with the motion, "Academic qualification is a priority in job applications than experience".
The parliamentary-style debate was aimed at enhancing the students' Malay fluency and their ability to present opinions critically and spontaneously, without notes or reference materials.
On hand to present the prizes was the guest of honour, Awang Haji Mohd Noor Jusmin bin Haji Abdul Samad, the Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
The selection of winners by the judges was based on the delivery style of the participating teams, which included the ability to control issues and responses to interruptions during the debate.
