Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will engage Sarawak Energy next month in its efforts to ensure alleys under its jurisdiction are properly lighted, said Dato Wee Hong Seng.
The Kuching South Mayor said the council will request the state utility company to replace the bulbs for streetlights to those of light-emitting diode (LED) in order to reduce the incidences of crime at the poorly lit locations.
“At the moment, like what I told the viewers during my Facebook live videos, flooding in the city is one issue that we are also currently looking at and another issue is traffic congestion,” said Wee when met by the press during MBKS’s ‘Chap Goh Mei’ concert at MBKS Theatre, Jalan Padungan here last night.
He added that among the other matters prioritised by the council this year included the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) across the city and addressing hygienic problem at food premises and public toilets.
Wee said MBKS is also working closely with Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and state health department to inspect the cleanliness of food premises around the city.
“We have also gone to Kuching International Airport to inspect the toilets. Once everything has been finalised, we will distribute the work to the councillors for them to follow-up,” he added.
Wee said he will also be speaking to Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) this week regarding the access to fire hydrants being blocked by illegal extension of buildings.
The Land and Survey Department will also be roped in to address the issue, he added.
“As a result, you know, there should more action and less criticism. It is only then we can make things easier for people to actually work together because I think it is time people realise that there should be a stop to all the politicking,” he said.
Wee stressed it is impossible for MBKS to be aware of all the problems happening or about to happen in places under the council’s jurisdiction.
“(There) I believe that it is only when we actually work together that we can achieve more. So, this is the direction that we are moving into this year,” he said.
Wee said members of the public are always welcomed to channel their feedback and complaints to the council and they will try the best to resolve the issues soonest possible.
The public can channel their complaints to the council by raising the matter during Wee’s weekly Facebook live session on Saturday afternoon, contacting 010-6601919 or submitting through iPeople mobile application.
