JAKARTA

The Jakarta Police said on Tuesday that the driver of a Toyota Fortuner who was caught in a viral video attacking a fellow motorist in Central Jakarta was not under the influence of alcohol during the incident.

"He was not intoxicated. When committing the action he was healthy and sober," Said South Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Ade Ary Syam, as quoted by Kompas.com.

Ade also disclosed that the attacker, identified as 24-year-old Giorgio Ramadhan, had been named suspect for the destruction of property, based on Article 406 of the Criminal Code. If found guilty, he could be sentenced to 32 months in prison and/or receive a fine of Rp 4.5 million (US$296).

Giorgio was caught on camera in a fit of road rage that has drawn swift condemnation.

In the video, which was first shared on Twitter by a victim of the incident early on Sunday, the driver of a Toyota Fortuner SUV is seen apparently threatening the driver of a yellow Brio sedan with a sword, later smashing the sedan's windshield with what appeared to be an airsoft gun before driving the SUV into the side of the smaller vehicle.

Coordinating Political, Security and Legal Affairs Minister Mahfud MD called on the National Police to launch a probe into the road rage incident that has drawn widespread condemnation after footage of the clash went viral online over the weekend.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Giorgio issued an apology to the Brio sedan driver and the public.

"I want to sincerely apologize to Pak Ari Widianto as the Brio sedan driver who has suffered damages. I also apologize for the extraordinary behavior that I inflicted on him," Giorgio said.
