A Teacher's Day gathering was held yesterday at the Badi'ah Hotel in Jalan Tutong for the religious teachers of Brunei Zone IIB.
The event began with a recitation of Surah AlFatihah and Zainul Quran, followed by a welcoming address from Muhammad Hady bin Bukhari, Chairman of the Committee of Religious Schools Leaders (JKPSSU) and the Acting Headmaster of the Sungai Besar Religious School in Brunei Zone IIB.
In his speech, Muhammad Hady said that this year's celebration carried a special significance, in view of the approaching retirement of the event's guest of honour, Ustazah Hajah Rusita bind Haji Yahya, the Director of Islamic Studies under the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA).
"The theme of this year's event - 'A Wise Teacher is the Creator of a Visionary Generation' - carries some significance and is relevant to the policy of how teachers should be in the management of their respective duties," he said.
"Religious teachers are primarily role models for the students to emulate in terms of developing a character with virtue, knowledge and vision, for the benefit of the country."
In her speech, Ustazah Hajah Rusita expressed that religious teachers must be prudent in the guidance and leadership of their students, as entrusted by the Department of Islamic Studies.
"The head teacher's knowledge should be efficiently utilised by the other teachers in the instruction of their respective students," she said.
"If an issue or a problem arises in school, it should be managed intelligently by the teachers to avoid any unnecessary misunderstandings."
She further explained that parents should be aware that their children are not merely required
to attend religious school for academic purposes, but also to acquire discipline and character, including through participation in school activities.
"Communication between teachers, parents and students must always be open for everything to run smoothly," she added.
Later, tokens of appreciation were presented to Ustazah Hajah Rusita as well as several other retiring religious teachers.
Furthermore, awards were presented to the Pengiran Anak Puteri Azemah Ni'matul Bolkiah and Sultan Sharif Ali Religious Schools for their outstanding pass rates in the Primary Religious Schools Certificate Examination (SSSRU).
Yesterday's event also featured a Nasyid performance led by Junaidah binti Haji Abidin, as well as a Tausveh presentation.
