A man was killed when a Natural Gas for Vehicles (NGV) tank exploded at a petrol station in Taman Mount Austin here.
The victim, Mohd Faizal Mazlan, 33, is believed to be a private contractor carrying out maintenance work at the station.
The 2.50pm explosion caused a huge fireball that brought traffic around the station and up to Jalan Tebrau to a standstill.
State Fire Department assistant director (operations) Mohd Rizal Buang said a team of firemen rushed to the scene and managed to turn off a valve from the main NGV tank.
“Our initial investigation showed the petrol station owner informed the contractor after finding a leak on Monday.
“However during repair works, the tank suddenly exploded,” he said, adding that the victim’s charred body had been sent to Hospital Sultan Ismail.
Some 15 firemen from three fire stations rushed to the scene after receiving a call at 2.55pm.
