Brunei Darussalam prioritises the Universal Health Coverage, UHC, as a fundamental pillar in the planning and implementation of the national health care system framework. It is to provide a high quality and comprehensive health care that is effective, efficient, responsive, affordable, equitable and accessible to all. However, the Minister of Health stressed that there are challenges that need to be addressed, including sufficient human resources, population aging, increasing health care costs and increasing burden due to non-communicable diseases.
Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Awang Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar shared the matter during the plenary session of the 35th Commonwealth Health Ministers' Meeting in Geneva, Switzerland on the 20th of May. The meeting focused on exploring opportunities to review the Commonwealth's progress in the UHC agenda as well as sharing the challenges and priorities of the Commonwealth countries on issues related to UHC. This included the role of primary health care towards achieving UHC and efforts in strengthening preparedness to deal with pandemics.
Meanwhile, health-related matters of interest among Commonwealth countries were discussed by the Minister of Health during a goodwill visit to Her Excellency Patricia Scotland, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. Brunei Darussalam was given the honour of chairing the Commonwealth Advisory Committee on Health, CACH which is a committee that provides advice and guidance to Commonwealth Health Ministers and the Commonwealth Secretariat on public health issues of interest, for the term 2023 to 2024.
