A woman went against the wishes of her in-laws and had a pregnancy and gender reveal party – and now her sister-in-law has ghosted her after saying she should have been warned about it

When you're having a baby, one of the most exciting things is getting to tell all your friends and family the amazing news.

However, one couple found it slightly more complicated due to a "ban" on pregnancy reveals in the family. When they decided to go ahead and have a gender reveal party anyway, the woman's sister-in-law was left very angry – and even ghosted the mum-to-be.

According to the pregnant woman, the family have a ban on gender or pregnancy reveal events out of respect for her brother's sister, who is infertile.

Taking to popular forum Reddit, the 29-year-old woman explained: "My [sister-in-law] Jennifer [name has been changed], 27, is infertile. My heart hurts for her. But the way my in-laws handle it, in my opinion, is pathetic – you can't have pregnancy announcements.

"No children under five can attend family events."

The anonymous woman explained that when she first found out she was pregnant, she decided to wear baggy clothing to hide the bump, especially because of her "history with miscarriages".

However, after a while she and her partner decided that "despite her rules," they would go ahead and announce the pregnancy.

She continued: "We both agreed that we would do a surprise gender reveal. We had the doctor give us an envelope on what the gender was last appointment.

"We hosted a gathering where we would announce it. And also had the party for the gender reveal.

"When she [sister-in-law] found out she was angry and asked me why I didn't give her a heads up. And I know how she feels about this."

However, the woman didn't feel like she owed her to tell her beforehand. She explained: "I told her I don't have to tell her anything and that she didn't have to be such a b***h about it. She stormed out and has been ghosting me and I am blocked on all of her socials."

However, now the woman has been left wondering if she went too far by calling her names.

The woman received thousands of comments on the forum, with many agreeing there was no need to warn the sister-in-law, and that the family had been handling it wrong.

One person commented: "I don't think a heads up would've been necessary as it was a surprise gender reveal. [Original poster] has ever right to not want to spoil the surprise. Simply not inviting her would've sufficed though."

While others believed there was no problem in having a gender reveal party, they thought the sister-in-law deserved a heads up.

One person explained: "It's unfair that your in laws have certain rules about pregnancy announcements and children at parties etc, and I don't think you're wrong for wanting to tell people you're expecting.

"What makes you the [a**hole] is that you could have given your [sister-in-law] a heads up, then called her a b***h for asking why you didn't. You knew that she would be hurt but you invited her to a surprise party without any kind of consideration for her feelings."
