The first group of Indonesian teachers will leave for Australia to undertake a new work-study program on Friday, says a press statement issued by Australian Embassy in Jakarta.

It says 136 teachers will travel to Australia to study the Australian education system in a short course at the University of Melbourne.

They’ll also undertake work placement in an Australian school and stay with a local family. The teachers will experience local teaching practices firsthand.

“The three-week course will provide practical examples on how participants can implement these methods and share this material with their colleagues on their return to Indonesia,” the statement says.

Australia’s universities and technical colleges have become the destination of choice for Indonesians looking to study abroad. In 2015, there were 19,300 Indonesian enrolled in Australian education institutions.

Meanwhile, under the Australian government’s New Colombo Plan, in the last two years, 2,000 young Australians have lived, worked and studied in Indonesia. (bbn)
