'My Boyfriend Threw Me A Surprise Wedding - I Was So Shocked As He Hadn't Even Proposed'

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

For many people, their wedding day is something they dream about their whole lives. From a romantic proposal, to the excitement yet nerve-wracking planning process – and then being able to have your perfect day with all your friends and family, it's a huge milestone.

One woman, who wanted it all, was completely taken aback when her boyfriend of five years threw her a surprise wedding without her knowledge. While the boyfriend saw it as a huge romantic gesture, she felt blindsided and took it as a breach of trust.

The 30-year-old was completely unaware what was going to happen when her longterm boyfriend Mark, 32, had invited her to a supposedly fancy party.

Excited about the event, she had dressed up in her best attire, but when she entered the grand hall of the venue, she was completely taken aback to see all her friends, family and acquaintances erupt with applause as soon as she entered.

In a post on the popular forum website Reddit, the anonymous woman explained: "It turns out, Mark had orchestrated an elaborate surprise wedding for us without my knowledge.

"Everyone erupted into applause as I stood there, shocked and overwhelmed. I just felt a mix of emotions.

"While I love Mark and had dreamed of our future together, the idea of getting married without any prior discussion or consent felt like a breach of trust."

Having discussed marriage but no immediate plans of a wedding, she pulled Mark aside and expressed her concerns. She explained that she had wanted to be part of the planning process, decision-making, and to have the chance to "prepare mentally and emotionally for such a significant milestone".

Mark brushed off her concerns as it was a "romantic gesture," so she ultimately decided not to go ahead with the surprise wedding - much to the confusion and disappointment of the guests.

In the post, she continued: "Now, I find myself at odds with Mark, our families, and even some of our friends who believe I overreacted and spoiled a beautiful moment.

"However, I firmly believe that a marriage should be a joint decision, with open communication and shared expectations."

She emphasised that she still wanted to stay with Mark and get married some day, which is why her friends and family were confused that she'd "wasted a perfectly good wedding".

In the comment section many people agreed that a wedding should be a joint decision, with one person adding: "A marriage is a partnership, not an ambush."

Another added: "I'd also be asking all my family and friends if they knew about this. Who told this man this was a good idea?!?"

A third commented: "You're right, a wedding is a huge milestone and you have every right to want to play a role in its planning. A surprise proposal would have been one thing (and a romantic gesture done right) but to dump a whole wedding on you without warning is ridiculous."
