JAKARTA

The North Sumatra chapter of the National Narcotics Agency foiled an alleged drug trafficking attempt, seizing 85 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine and more than 50,000 ecstasy pills that were stuffed into five fish barrels.

The North Sumatra agency head Brig. Gen. Andi Loedianto said police had arrested three suspects in the border area between the North Sumatra and Riau provinces.

"This involves a new modus operandi. The suspects [allegedly] used this technique [hiding contraband in fish barrels] in order to evade inspections and checks by port officers," Andi told reporters at the North Sumatra Police headquarters on Monday.

Andi said the police were still tracking down other suspects who managed to escape during the arrest. (dmr)
