KENINGAU, SABAH
Former headmaster of SK Kepayan Baru, Paulus Anil has claimed that not action has been taken to prevent the recurrence of flash flood that has affected the school for six years now despite complaints having been made a number of times.
He said such a situation was a cause for concern for the safety of the students of the school.
According to Paulus, the flash flood that hit the school yesterday was caused by water overflowing from the Teterikon River as its culvert could not cope with the volume of water if the river flooded..
“In the flood today, three units of teachers’ quarters, a security guard hut, and a pre-school building were flooded by water of about a meter deep,” he said yesterday.
According to him, the school was often flooded when heavy rains occurred, and the main factor causing water to overflow was the small culvert that could not accommodate the large quantities of water.
“Complaints have been made before.
“I do not know why the authorities are not serious and take immediate action as these incidents have occurred six times,” he said.
Paulus urged the minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, who is also the MP for Pensiangan Tan Sri Joseph Kurup to allocate provisions to replace the existing culvert to a type ‘U’ culvert.
A school teacher who was affected by the flood, said many properties were damaged every time the flood occurred, especially furniture, and asked the authorities to take appropriate action.
A spokesman for the school said the school was not closed despite the flood but had given permission for the students to return home early for safety reasons.
