Universiti Brunei Darussalam's 35th Convocation Ceremony

1,149 graduates received their Doctor of Philosophy, PhD, Masters and Bachelor's degrees and diplomas in various disciplines at this year's 35th Universiti Brunei Darussalam, UBD Convocation ceremony. His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Chancellor of UBD conferred the PhD and Bachelor's degrees to 835 graduates. The ceremony took place on 21st August morning, at the UBD Chancellor Hall.

 

The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah of Al-Fatihah led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Doctor Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti.

 

Upon arrival, His Majesty was welcomed by Yang Berhormat Datin Seri Setia Doctor Dayang Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd. Salleh, Minister of Education, and Doctor Hazri bin Haji Kifle, Vice Chancellor of UBD. Also gracing the ceremony was His Royal Highness Prince Doctor Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, as Pro-Chancellor of UBD. The reading of Surah An-Nahl was presented by Awang Muhammad Izzuddin bin Haji Nor Hisham, undergraduate from the Bachelor of Health Sciences in Biomedical Science.

 

In a welcoming address, the Vice Chancellor of UBD among other things highlighted UBD's development to become an excellent university in the region and the global arena. He also said that UBD has established a Research Management System, ReMS that provides a more conducive, efficient and user-friendly research ecosystem. From here, research results have grown in terms of quantity and quality. Research publications and citations have shown a very positive increase where currently eleven of UBD's academics are among the top 2 percent of scientists worldwide according to the annual report published by Stanford University.

 

His Majesty then delivered the titah of consent to confer the degrees and diplomas to the graduates. Of the 835 graduates who received degrees in the morning, 43 graduates including international students received PhD's in Education; Applied Linguistics; Chemistry; Geoscience; Biotechnology; Computer Science; Applied Physics; Management; Economics; Finance; Nursing; Midwifery; Clinical Sciences; Systems Engineering; Islamic Civilisation and Contemporary Issues; Energy Studies; and Islamic Governance.

 

792 graduates were conferred Bachelor Degrees in Literature; Business; Engineering; Health Sciences; Health Sciences in Medical and Dentistry; Science; and Science in Digital Economy.

 

UBD continues to record a significant development and achievement whereby UBD is now ranked 16th in the 'Times Higher Education (THE) Best Small Universities in The World 2023''.

 

 In 'THE World University Rankings', UBD achieved excellence in Education, Research and Industrial Findings as well as shows UBD's high quality in learning, research and capabilities in entrepreneurial field. Doa selamat was read by the State Mufti.

 

 UBD continues to be committed towards several main strategic objectives and impactful research to produce a future-ready graduate.
