Umno Youth To Lodge Police Reports Nationwide Over Alleged AGC Memo

 September 1st, 2023  |  22:06 PM  |   1361 views

KUALA LUMPUR

Unhappy with the Attorney General's Chambers' silence over an alleged internal memo, Umno Youth says it will lodge police reports nationwide so that an investigation can be conducted immediately.

Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh said this was in relation to the leaked 12-page internal memo, supposedly from the AGC, suggesting the government not proceed with the 1MDB case against former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Akmal said although Attorney General Tan Sri Idrus Harun had said that an investigation would be conducted, there had been no confirmation if the memo was genuine.

"Umno Youth feels aggrieved because, until today, there has been no response to the demand for an investigation to be conducted to determine the authenticity of the document and its contents.

"On the basis of concern and adherence to the third and fourth Rukun Negara – the Supremacy of the Constitution and the Rule of Law – Umno Youth will mobilise its members throughout the country to make police reports so that an investigation can be carried out by relevant authorities and appropriate action taken to restore public confidence in the Malaysian legal system," he said in a statement on Friday (Sept 1).

The 12-page document dated Sept 10, 2019 was supposedly addressed to former AG Tan Sri Tommy Thomas.

In the document, the International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) prosecution team reportedly expressed concerns that a strong prima facie case could not be built for the six charges against Najib and former Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Irwan Serigar made at the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 25, 2018.

The two were jointly charged with six charges under Section 409 of the Penal Code for CBT amounting to RM6.6bil in government funds involving payments to IPIC.

On Aug 17, Idrus Harun told The Star that the AGC was investigating the matter but stopped short of confirming the authenticity of the memo.

On Friday, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali in a statement said Datuk Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh would replace Idrus as the new AG on Sept 6.

"It was very sad when the AGC announced that the AG is currently on leave until he retires on Sept 6.

"The AG's action of announcing his holiday without providing the results of the investigation and proper response to the demands made by Umno Youth has left this issue hanging.

"This indirectly has a negative impact on the level of public confidence in the AGC," Akmal added.
