BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

A total of 598 graduates from Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) received their certificates from His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, and Chancellor of' Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), during the UTB Convocation yesterday.

Accompanying His Majesty was His Royal Highness Prince (Dr) Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, and Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Brunei's (UTB).

This year witnessed a total of 598 students graduating from UTB, with 309 Bachelor's Degree graduates from Intake 4, 119 Higher National Diploma Level Five graduates from Intake 2 and 170 Higher National Diploma graduates from Intake 29.

The event commenced with a reading of selected verses from the Al-Quran by
Awangku Muhammad , Hafizul Ilmi bin Pengiran Haji Marjuki, who graduated with Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

This was followedby a briefappreciation of the verses by Mohamad Syukri bin Jamil, who graduated with Higher National Diploma (HND) in Network Engineering.

The ceremony continued with a welcoming speech delivered by Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, the Vice-Chancellor of UTB.

"This year's convocation has made history since the graduates will be receiving their certificates under the auspices of `University Teknologi Brunei' for the first time," she said.

"The rebranding has given UTB a new identity, and attracted stakeholders from several universities and industries. UTB was invited to participate as a founding member of the Asia Technological University Network, with other prestigious universities from abroad."

She also highlighted the ongoing process of an accreditation programme by professional bodies, which is set to become a benchmark on the quality of the curriculum at UTB.

"With the accreditation programme, UTB hopes to attract both local and international students, including those who are employed, by which they can apply for UTB's part-time courses," she said. "Currently, the part-time degree programme is only offered for Bachelor of Business in the Business Information System, and for Bachelor of Science in Internet Computing. Insya Allah, the part-time courses will be extended to include Master's degrees."

She also said that an International Advisory Panel had been appointed to give an external perspective of the university, particularly since the accreditation process would require UTt to provide an educational environment and infrastructure on par with international standards.

After the vice-chancellor's welcoming speech, His Majesty delivered a titah, which was then followed by a presentation of certificates to the new graduates.

The event concluded with the recitation of the Doa Selamat by Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti. UTB is an engineering and technology university in Brunei Darussalam that specialises in the niche areas of engineering, business, computing, applied sciences and mathematics. It was established as a higher learning institution in 1986 as Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB), a higher learning institution that offered BTEC Higher National Diploma programmes in Engineering, Business and Computing.
