BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome, and thank you for joining us at our 2016 UPS. Election Open House.
We're honored that you have chosen to spend your morning with us, watching history being made.
because every four years, when we hold our Presidential elections, we have the opportunity to see a new piece of American history, regardless of who the candidates are.
I've noted in the past that America is a vibrant, noisy, and even a messy democracy—as we've clearly seen as this election year and the candidates' campaigns have unfolded.
The road to Election 2016 has been paved with passionate entreaties to the American people; with critical political analysis on broadcast news shared throughout the world; and with spirited debates not only between the candidates themselves, but also at American dinner tables, and in schools, businesses, and places of worship.
Just last month, President Obama said, "One of the great things about America's democracy is we have a vigorous, sometimes bitter, political contest. And when it's done, historically, regardless of party, the person who loses the election congratulates the winner, reaffirms our democracy, and we move forward. That's how democracy survives, because we recognize that there is something more important than any individual campaign—and that is making sure that the integrity and trust in our institutions sustains itself. Because democracy, by definition, works by consent, not by force."
This journey, and even this transparent test of America's democracy, has been a long one, indeed, as we have watched – and continue to watch today – with baited breath to see who will lead the United States for the next four years.
This election has certainly highlighted a number of domestic and foreign policy issues that our next President will have to address. But our system, regardless of who is in the White House, represents a country that moves forward every day, seeking to create a better nation than the one we grew up in... - seeking to better its relationships with friends and allies around the world... and wanting to help make the world a more Peaceful and Prosperous place for all.
Today, we're seeing the will of the American people in determining their leadership on the domestic and global stage. And already, our colleagues in Washington, D.C. are preparing for a peaceful and orderly transition of power between President Obama and the candidate that will succeed him.
What is certain, however, is that regardless of the changes we'll see in personnel or policy, we know that our relationships with our friends around the world will continue to be of paramount importance. am firm in my belief that our relationship with Brunei Darussalam will continue to thrive under the next Administration, just as it has under President Obama.
What will not change is the constructive and warm relationship we share with His Majesty and his government, or the wonderful people-to-people ties that we are so fortunate to enjoy. Our joint efforts to build greater mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of Brunei Darussalam will continue.
And so this morning, thank you for joining us as we watch history being made in the United States. We invite you to stay and share these moments with us as we watch election returns reported over the next few hours.
And just as we've enjoyed engaging with you all over the past few years, we'll look forward to engaging with you tomorrow, too.
Thank you.
