It’s a truth universally known that when it comes to wedding etiquette, no one other than the bride wears white, and that’s mean no ivory, cream or off-white either.
But apparently, not everyone has got the memo.
One woman decided to overlook the rule for her cousin’s wedding, and order not only a white dress, but one which comes with a long train – you know, like an actual wedding dress.
The woman’s sister shared the story on Reddit, saying that she attempted to thwart the plans to wear the eerily similar wedding dress but to no avail.
The Redditor posted on the group: ‘My mum ordered a dress for my sister that is almost white and super long, it even has a long train.
‘I showed the bride and bride was so upset and says no she can’t wear that. So I tell my mum and my sister that she can’t wear that dress.
‘And my mum and sisters start blowing me up about how it’s what my sister wants. It’s her body she’s gonna wear what she wants to wear.’
She explained how she tried to gently explain to her sister and mum that it was inappropriate to wear something like this.
The advice, however, fell on deaf ears.
‘[My mum and sister say] they never heard the rule that you can’t wear colours that look like white to a wedding. Now they’re mad at me for apparently not having their back and they got other family members involved.
‘Now the bride is stressed and everyone is mad at me. I just don’t know what to do at this point.’
The woman asked whether she was in the wrong – but as you might expect, almost everyone said she was not.
Redditors were on the side of the poster, saying: ‘Your mother and sister either lived their entire lives inside a jam jar or are lying through their teeth. Not wearing white or colours too close to white is the most basic etiquette for weddings.’
Another said: ‘Seriously inappropriate. I don’t get how they don’t see it as inappropriate. The bride is going to be upset if she wears that dress.’
Other said the poster had done her bit, and it was up to the bride to speak to the cousin and tell her she feels about it.
One person did point out that it might be a cultural thing as not everyone wears white to weddings.
