PENAMPANG: UPKO
Komulakan Movement chief Ewon Benedick yesterday urged the Supreme Barisan Nasional (BN) leadership to select candidates with the best package in the upcoming general election.
He said during the UPKO Women, Youth and Komulakan Convention yesterday that BN should not risk its potential of winning just because all its component parties were too focused on defending their traditional seats instead of wanting to win the election.
He reminded that they joined the election to win it, hence, BN must prioritise winning instead of the quota of seats.
He said many people were not in any political party but were watching the packages offered by the candidates selected.
Ewon said BN needed to strategise to win the upcoming 14th general election and that included seats swapping between component parties so that the best attributes of the BN candidates could be highlighted to win support from the people.
“I am of the opinion that the seat quota system should be re-considered since it does not motivate leadership and the people at constituencies that were lost during the 13th general election,” he said.
He said instead of focusing on the people and strengthening the leadership of the party, the component parties focused too much on maintaining their seats.
Ewon also reminded that political leaders were constantly being observed, all thanks to social media applications.
“The candidates must be able to defend the leadership of the government and at the same time, defend the people … they must be capable of voicing out issues that were in the hearts of the people and help towards getting a solution for them,” he said.
Ewon also spoke on the status and rights of Sabah in the Malaysian Federation as stated in Malaysia Agreement 1963.
He said issues related to the Malaysia Agreement were constantly discussed by Sabahans and that various awareness programmes concerning the agreement had been conducted.
He said such effort should be led by the state government and chaired by the Chief Minister.
Ewon also said the people of Sabah were questioning whether the amendment made on the Federal Constitution received the blessing from the Sabah Head of State or the state government.
“The state BN government has inherited a lot of mistakes due to the decisions that were made in the 1960s until the 1980s,” he said.
Also present at the event were acting deputy UPKO president Datuk Siringan Gubat, Youth Exco chief Arthur Sen and Women Exco chief Datin Seri Panglima Dr Jaina Sintian.
