BEKASI, WEST JAVA

The Jakarta Environmental Office said it has controlled the spread of fire in the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Site (TSPT) in Bekasi, West Java, on Sunday afternoon.

"The fire has been successfully localized and controlled. We coordinated with the Jakarta Fire Control and Rescue Office and the Bekasi City for the quick response in extinguishing the fire," Head of the Jakarta Environmental Office Asep Kuswanto confirmed here on Sunday.

According to him, several fire trucks were quickly deployed when the fire in Zone 2 of the Bantargebang landfill was reported at 2 p.m. local time.

Four water tanks from the Integrated Waste Management Unit (UPST), two firefighters from UPST, 15 firefighters from Jakarta, and four firefighters from Bekasi City were also deployed to control the fire.

Head of Jakarta Fire Control and Rescue Office Satriadi Gunawan said that at least 60 firefighters from his side were involved in the extinguishing process.

In addition, the Jakarta Provincial Government sent several excavators to dredge the burning garbage and carry out watering.

"Thank God, in less than three hours, we managed to control the fire. Now, it is still a cooling process," Kuswanto said.

He explained, based on the information he received, the fire started at 2:15 p.m. at Zone 2 of the Bantargebang Site, right in front of the powerhouse and waste power plant.

Zone 2 is said to be an unactive zone and the fire might start from the dry garbage that flew in by the wind.

The Jakarta Environmental Office still stationed a fleet of fire trucks at the site and is still finding the cause of the fire, the total burned area, and the economic loss due to the incident.
