Online video platform YouTube has launched an application in Singapore offering a “more family-friendly version” of YouTube for parents and children.
Called YouTube Kids, the app has channels and playlists in four categories – Shows, Music, Learning and Explore.
One of the new channels is Infinite Kids, created by homegrown media company Infinite Studios, a learning channel for four to eight year olds featuring the studio’s own original animated series, as well as local animation titles from other Singapore content creators.
There is also a parenting channel, KandieNetwork, hosted by celebrity family Kate Pang and Andie Chen along with their baby son Aden and baby daughter Avery.
Among its features, the app has larger images and bold icons. It also supports 360° videos.
For children for who cannot spell or type the videos they are looking for, there is a voice search option.
For parents concerned about the content their children view, the “search” option in the app can be turned off to restrict viewing to a limited set of videos. Parents who are logged in can also restrict certain videos and channels from their child’s viewing.
A built-in timer will alert children when their session is over, while background music and sound effects can also be switched off.
In addition, parents can set their own passcode, and access settings and other parental information in the app.
YouTube Kids has been launched in more than 20 countries. It is now available to download for free on Google Play and the App Store. YouTube Kids can also be watched on TV, using Chromecast, Apple TV, game consoles or a smart TV.
