With elbows on the platform, the eight-year-old boy peered over the edge as the caskets of his younger sister and brother were lowered into the crematorium incinerator.
Wearing an Upin and Ipin baseball cap and clad in a blue shirt over a pair of black shorts, he seemed too young to understand that he was at the funeral of his sister Cheah Kai Sze, three, and seven-month-old Kai Wen.
But reality hit and the boy broke into tears as he waved a final goodbye towards the coffins at the crematorium in Jalan Kuari, Cheras.
His other brother, aged six, looked on with a confused expression as the casket of their father, Cheah Hing Soon, 34, followed. On Sept 26, the bodies of Kai Sze and Kai Wen were found stuffed into separate plastic containers in an apartment in Kepong while that of Cheah was sprawled in the master bedroom.
Earlier, the two boys, carrying bouquets of yellow chrysanthemums, had followed the hearse with their mother, Kaw Mei Yen, 35, and a group of mourners.
Kaw, who is out on bail on a charge of neglecting her youngest child, never left the boys’ side throughout the brief service at the Kwong Tong Funeral Parlour in Jalan Dewan Bahasa.
She was heard muttering “lao gong, lao gong” (husband, husband) through tearful sobs as Cheah’s coffin went into the incinerator.
Cheah’s mother was also overwhelmed by emotion while his father and siblings were stoic.
After the funeral, Kaw left in a taxi with her two sons while Cheah’s family drove off in their cars about 20 minutes later.
The case has shocked the nation. After the bodies were discovered, the two brothers told police their father was abusive.
The remains were claimed by Cheah’s family on Saturday, almost two months after the incident.
