CANADA

This might be the most long-winded, confusing burglary ever carried out.

You’d think a criminal going to the great lengths of breaking and entering would probably be looking to make off with more than just six cupcakes.

But not this guy.

It was a far cry from your typical break-in when he targeted a bakery in Canada in the early hours of Friday morning.

The worst consequences come the end of his raid were the broken glass he’d smashed out of the door to gain entrance and one stolen box of sweet treats.

It was so bizarre that even the owner of Sweet Something in Vancouver admitted it’s ‘one of the best laughs’ she’s ever had.

No burglary is ever a good burglary, but Emma Irvine was at least able to see the funny side of it.

Remarkable CCTV footage captured the long-drawn out theft from the moment it started at around 3am.

The suspect was seen lurking outside the front of the bakery for about 15 minutes and intermittently knocking on the door before thrusting his foot through the glass to get inside.

Ms Irvine said he was behaving ‘as if he was going to pick up a cake at 3pm instead of 3am’.

Seemingly in no hurry whatsoever to get away with the goods, the perpetrator is then captured relaxing in the shop for a while before attempting to clean up after himself.

‘He walked around, used our bathroom, sat down for quite a long time and had a drink of water,’ said Ms Irvine.

‘He was in no rush. He realised, I guess, that he’d made a mess and grabs a mop and bucket and goes to try to clean up all of the glass from the door that he kicked in.’

Almost an hour passed by in which the man even stopped to put on his orange sunglasses and take some selfies on the store’s phone, reports CBC News.

Once he was done with his sweeping and photos, he helped himself to the box of six cupcakes and eventually made his exit.

Ms Irvine admitted that she was upset when she first saw the damage the following morning.

But after watching back the video evidence of what actually happened, she couldn’t help but find it funny.

She said: ‘It turned from this not so great experience to some of the best laughs I’ve ever had. You just can’t make this stuff up.

‘Honestly, I think he really wanted cupcakes. Maybe they are that good.’

Ms Irvine told Global News that she had to remake the six stolen cakes for her customer.

In an attempt to make the best of a bad situation, she’s also now selling chocolate champagne cupcakes topped with an orange sunglasses-shaped sugar cookie to help pay for the new glass in the door.

She added: ‘It’s one of those situations, you have to turn lemons into lemonade and you hope for the best.’

The Vancouver Police Department told CBC it is investigating the incident involving a man who ‘appeared to be in his 20s’ but no arrests have been made.

A spokesman said: ‘It is alleged he took a single box of cupcakes valued at £24 ($30).’

It turns out you can have your cake – and sit down, relax, drink a glass of water, clean up after yourself, snap some selfies – and eat it too.

Yesterday, a UK chip shop owner revealed they’d hired a teenager to wear an eagle costume to scare off the seagulls.
