A family were gifted with something a little extra this year after they discovered a baby owl had been hiding in their Christmas tree for four days.

The White family from Lexington, Kentucky, pick their own tree and this year was no different.

Michele White said there was no indication an owl was hiding in the Christmas tree.

She told WDKY-TV: ‘I have three dogs. We use this room non-stop, watching TV, the kitchen’s right here, no indication.’

Bobby Hayes, who owns Magic Carpet Cleaning, was at the home while the family was out and first noticed the bird after plugging in a piece of equipment as the tree started to sway.

‘The owl was literally sitting on a lower limb here,’ Mr Hayes said.

‘It crawled up into the tree further. It took me several minutes to even find it.’

Photos were sent to Michele from Bobby and was glad he was there to deal with the owl.

‘Everybody’s going to be able to have a merry Christmas now,’ Mr Hayes said.

The owl was safely released back into the family’s garden.

Another family got the shock of their life after discovering a real-life owl had made a home in their indoor Christmas tree.

Kate Newman, from Atlanta, was bemused when her 10 year-old daughter India told her one of the tree ornaments was scaring her, and went to investigate.

She was stunned to discover the ‘ornament’ was actually an eastern screech owl – and that the little bird was very happy with its cozy, sheltered home.
