Asean Capital Leaders Strengthen Cooperation

Heads of the governments Of the capital cities of ASEAN member states have reaffirmed their commitment to initiating and strengthening practical cooperation through various fields following the ASEAN Charter and Vision 2025.

 

The officials made their reaffirmation at the 4th Meeting of Governors/Mayors of ASEAN Capitals held in Vientiane on Tuesday.

 

“This meeting will serve as a forum for discussions and the exchange of knowledge and experience between ASEAN governors/mayors, which will ultimately contribute to the development of ASEAN capitals in our region,” said Vientiane Mayor Sinlavong Khoutphaythoune.

 

He added that the successful outcome of the 3rd Meeting of Governors/Mayors of ASEAN Capitals had contributed to the tightening of relationships between ASEAN capitals and especially in exchanging best practices in various areas which have been underpinned to the three pillars of the ASEAN Community such as sustainable urban development, traffic congestion solutions, the creation of green capitals, the tourism industry, capacity enhancement of the labour force, the cultural exchanges among other important issues.

 

Senior officials agreed and adopted the theme of “Commitment and Responsibility of ASEAN Capitals for ASEAN Integration”, which covers the four main subthemes of Creating ASEAN as Liveable Cities, Ensuring Public Security, Preserving and Promoting Traditional and Cultural Heritages and Promoting of Tourism, and Cooperating in the Strengthening of the Labour Force.

 

They agreed to share experiences and knowledge and to collaborate on ways to solve problems of road accidents and fires, food security, food safety and organic agriculture, and to help each other to create ASEAN capitals as more liveable cities.

 

The governors and mayors will create joint cooperation projects to maintain and promote the preservation and conservation of cultural heritage and to increase tourism exchanges.

 

They will also cooperate and assist on skills training and labour exchanges between developed and less-developed ASEAN capitals.

 

The 5th Meeting of Governors/Mayors of ASEAN Capitals will be hosted in the Philippines.
