It looked like a scene in a water park as a heavy downpour brought flash floods to Puchong.

The heavy rain caused a traffic crawl on the road near IOI Puchong, along the Damansara-Puchong Highway (LDP) yesterday.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Dep­artment assistant director (operations) Mohd Sani Harul said the water level reached between 0.3 and 0.6m and that the area began flooding at 3.40pm.

The Malaysian Highway Author­ity said at 4.30pm, the flood caused traffic heading to Puchong Jaya to slow down. Only two lanes along the highway were passable.

Subang Jaya Municipal Council corporate communications officer Muhammad Ali Miswan said the water receded quickly and the area was clear again by 5.30pm.

Last year, a 20-minute downpour saw the drainage system near the mall overflowing and flooding the carpark. A similar incident occurred in 2013.

Lincoln Wilson, 42, who owns a restaurant and bar in front of the highway, said he had to rush out of his shop to prevent his furniture from being swept away onto the LDP by the strong winds and rain.

“It was so sudden and the strong winds sent my heavy metal tables and wooden chairs, which were outdoors, flying towards the highway,” said Wilson.

He added that of his 10 chairs and tables, eight were damaged beyond repair.

A Chinese restaurant also had its plaster ceiling blown off by the powerful winds.

Videos on Facebook showed water nearly submerging vehicles at a carpark.

Two cars also appeared to be stranded on the road, one with its door opened and another with its hazard lights on.
