Debate: Cak Imin Calls For Community Involvement In Development

JAKARTA

Vice presidential candidate number 1, Muhaimin Iskandar, highlighted the need to involve the community in Indonesia's development during the second vice presidential debate here on Sunday.

"The people must be involved; the people must not left behind because the owner of this country is the people. The government is only the implementer for this country's owner," Cak Imin, as he is known, said.

He emphasized that national development and policies must be based on legal justice, climate justice, ecological justice, intergenerational justice, agrarian justice, and social justice.

Speaking on the impact of the climate crisis and environmental disaster in Indonesia, he assessed that environmental ethics and a balance between humans and nature are needed to overcome the crisis.

"Climate crisis has not been handled seriously; it is even shown that the budget to tackle the climate crisis is far below the budget for other programs," Cak Imin said.

The presidential and vice presidential candidate pair Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar is raising a big theme of "Just and Prosperous Indonesia for All" for their vision, missions, and work programs. The pair's missions are outlined through the "eight paths of change."

In mission number three, namely realizing sustainable ecological justice for generations, they aims to strengthen environmental governance, among other things.

One of the efforts to achieve the goal is protecting and governing the environment based on the principles of social and ecological justice, including intergenerational justice.

They are also encouraging environmental protection and governance to involve the community, including the affected groups, such as traditional communities, women, and other vulnerable groups.

The second vice presidential candidate debate was part of a series of election debates for the upcoming general elections. The themes raised in Sunday's debate are natural resources, food, carbon tax, environment, agrarian issues, and traditional communities.

Indonesia will hold the 2024 General Elections on February 14, 2024, in which around 204.8 million voters are expected to participate. The campaigning period started on November 28, 2023, and will end on February 10, 2024.
