His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, attended the State Funeral of Allahyarham Tun Dato Laila Utama Pehin Sri Dr. Haji Abdul Taib bin Mahmud, the former Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak in Kuching, Sarawak. Born on 21st May 1936 in Miri, Allahyarham Tun Dato Laila Utama Pehin Sri Dr. Haji Abdul Taib passed away early Wednesday morning, 21st February 2024, at Cardiac Vascular Sentral Kuala Lumpur, CVSKL at the age of 87 years old. Accompanying His Majesty was His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen. Upon arrival at Kuching International Airport, His Majesty was welcomed by Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Seri Laila Jasa Datuk Amar Haji Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Second Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development, and Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment, as Minister-in-Attendance; and His Excellency Retired Brigadier General Dato Paduka Haji Mahmud bin Haji Saidin, High Commissioner of Brunei Darussalam to Malaysia.
At the Demak Mosque, His Majesty performed the mass Zuhur prayer and funeral prayer for Allahyarham Tun Dato Laila Utama Pehin Sri Dr. Haji Abdul Taib bin Mahmud. Allahyarham was then laid to rest during a burial ceremony at Demak Jaya Cemetery.
Also present were His Excellency Tun Doctor Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar, Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak and The Right Honourable Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Doctor Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, Premier of Sarawak. His Majesty bestowed Brunei Darussalam State Honorary Medals to Allahyarham, namely the Most Esteemed Family Order Laila Utama, D.K., which carries the title of Dato Laila Utama on 14th August 2014; and the Most Honourable Order of Seri Paduka Mahkota Brunei, S.P.M.B. which carries the title of Dato Seri Paduka on 3rd September 1989.
