Nothing says ‘I love you’ like cake, which is why M&S gave its iconic Connie the Caterpillar cake a Mother’s Day makeover.

The beloved treat has been pampered for the occasion, now rocking cucumber eye masks, a hair towel, and a spa essential, slippers. Good for her.

Available until March 10, the special Connie the Caterpillar cake also comes witha mask printed on the packaging which can be cut out, along with flowers you can glue on to customise.

An Instagram post by the supermarket announcing the change has racked up over 14,000 likes and countless comments, and hundreds of fans on Facebook tagged their loved ones in excitement.

‘I love her!’ commented Katie Emery, while Sue Phillips said: ‘This looks delicious, I want three.’

Not everyone was so over the moon, though.

Although the recipe is the same – with Connie’s new additions made from white chocolate – this limited edition option is smaller than the original.

Whereas previous Connies and her male counterpart Colin weigh in at 625g, Absolutely Spa-vellous Connie is a mere 350g.

Sue Grainger replied: ‘It is nice but it has got a lot smaller and I believe it has increased in price.’

Meanwhile, Carolyn Roberts joked it was ‘half a Connie’, followed by Sue Hare who added: ‘Instead of making the special ones half size I wish you would still do them full size. The family doesn’t get any smaller just because it’s a special occasion.’

This version is cheaper than the larger size, priced at £6.50 compared to £8.50, but it does appear Connie has fallen victim to shrinkflation. Last year’s seasonal cake was also half the original size but came in at £5.

Shoppers have noted everything from Quality Street to Lurpak getting smaller while prices got larger over the last few years, with finance experts advising people to check the ‘unit price’ when buying groceries to avoid overspending.

If you can stump up for this cute sponge roll for a Mother’s Day treat, however, we’re sure the smile on your mum’s face will be well worth it.

Speaking about Connie’s makeover, M&S cake developer Sarah Loxton said: ‘We know every Mum deserves the very best on Mother’s Day, and this totally delicious Connie is the perfect way to show your appreciation.

‘It was a no brainer for this year’s Connie glow-up – who doesn’t love a spa day!’
