Scientists Prove Toast DOES Always Land Butter-Side Down

Toast has a habit of landing buttered side down (Picture: PA)

It’s one of science’s most enduring questions: Why does toast always seem to land butter-side down?

As a collection of the world’s finest scientific minds continue to work on uncovering the secrets of the Higgs Boson God particle, another team have set about unravelling another (just as important) age-old mystery.

Food science expert Professor Chris Smith and his team believe they have finally proved that toast does always land with the butter hitting the floor.

His team dropped 100 slices of toast from table height in lab conditions to calculate the formula, highlighting that the way buttered toast lands isn’t just a case of jammy luck.

They found that the effects of gravity and drag combine to influence the event.

Therefore as the bread falls to the ground it only has the opportunity to achieve half a rotation before reaching the floor, thus landing butter-side down.

The experiment was commissioned to mark the DVD release of The Big Bang Theory season 6.

Professor Smith explained: ‘The question of whether the toast does indeed always land buttered-side down is exactly the kind of quandary that would keep the characters in Big Bang Theory awake at night.

‘Our research shows that sod’s law really does exist when it comes to dropped toast!’
