A couple bought a cake replica of their dog that looked so 'shockingly' realistic, they felt uncomfortable cutting into it - having to ask a friend to do the honours for them
Dog parents will celebrate their beloved pooches in any way they can, but one couple's attmpts hilariously failed when the cake arrived.
Anna Railton and Chris Smowton decided for their joint birthday celebration, they wanted a cake replica of their adorable dog Arthur. But when the life-sized whippet-like cake arrived, the pair described the likeness as "uncanny", and neither of them wanted to cut into the perfect pooch.
Anna admitted that she and Chris had to ask a friend to cut the doggy into slices, rather than one of them volunteering, sharing that it was "shockingly realistic".
She said: "It was literally the same size and weight as my dog - twice the size of what I thought it was going to be! And it came in this genuinely ridiculous huge box and I was just thinking 'My god, what have I done!'"
The spectacular design was crafted at The Cake Shop in the Oxford Covered Market, and it was the exact same size as their eight-year-old whippet. Anna even believes it was the same weight as their dog.
Anna explained that she'd "ordered cakes from them before", referring to them as "massive legends to enjoy doing slightly weird non-standard cakes".
Anna ordered the cake for 30 to 40 people, hence its large size, and asked the cake makers to make it look like her dog. She sent them various images of her beloved furry friend so they could make the dessert as realistic as possible. However, Anna "did not think anything" of the order, assuming that the cake would just be a normal size.
Anna said: "My lack of critical thinking meant I didn't think of the ramifications of the order. It was so shockingly realistic and even though it was a great cake cutting it up was not that pleasant! Someone else had to cut up the face - that I was not down for and was glad I didn't have to do that!"
