Man Explains What Plastic Pizza Stools Are Used For - But Others Aren't Convinced

Do you know what the pizza stools are there for? (Image: Getty Images/iStockphoto)

One man has shared his theory on what the white plastic stool inside takeaway pizza boxes is there for - but not everyone is convinced by the idea

There's nothing better than a hot, fresh takeaway pizza - but have you ever given a thought to what the white plastic stool in the box is for?

It's something that has baffled food fans for years, with suggestions ranging from "a table for a Barbie", to helping "keep the pizza in place" while it's out for delivery.

One man believes he knows exactly what it's there for - but his explanation is raising eyebrows. TikTok user @sebweb67 uploaded a video demonstrating the nifty trick on his margarita pizza.

The caption on the video, which has been viewed more than 880,000 times, reads: "How old were you when you realised this little thing that comes with your pizza is actually there to stop you touching other slices."

He removes the piece of plastic from the centre of the pizza and stabs it into the middle of one slice. While holding the stool, he effortlessly pulls up the piece next to it.

Using the pizza saver in this way means he doesn't get grease on his fingers, and he doesn't touch everybody else's food in the process - genius.

But the majority of viewers said that wasn't what the stool was originally made for. One argued: "It's to stop the lid hitting the topping." And a second joked, "That's not what it's for but ok."

Just recently, people admitted their minds were blown after discovering why pizza boxes are square, and not round. One fan, who goes by the username @FactBuddy, shared the explanation in a telling video on TikTok, as reported by NottinghamshireLive .

The creator wrote: "The reason pizza boxes are square and not round finally uncovered." They then asked viewers: "Have you ever wondered why pizza boxes are square? Pizzas are round, so shouldn't the boxes be round too? Well, there actually have been designs for round boxes for over 15 years. Pizza places don't typically like to use them."

FactBuddy then further explained: "You see, round boxes use several pieces of cardboard and are difficult to stack. But square boxes are cheaper to produce, requiring only a single sheet of cardboard."

The video has caused quite a discussion among viewers, with one baffled TikToker pointing out: "Pizza box is square, pizza is round, but then cut into triangles."

The beauty of the boxes being cardboard also means they can be recycled easily and you don't have to put too much thought into getting rid of it, but according to one waste expert, they can be a nightmare if not binned correctly.

Adam Herriott, a resource management specialist at the charity Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap), told The Guardian: "It's fine to be recycled as long as there's no cheese stuck on the box, in which case, rip that bit off. It's what we call '3D waste' – food and other solids – that's the problem. And give containers a rinse. Wash and squash."
