Woman Asks Tiktok To Guess Her Age And Gets Brutally Humbled With Answers

A woman was left 'intrigued' at the answers when she asked a very personal question to people on TikTok, sharing that she believes beauty standards for women are 'so high'

We all know that social media trolling is very real, but one woman put herself right in the spotlight when she asked users of TikTok to guess her real age - and some answers were brutal.

Kate Winney said she thought it would be "fun" to participate in the social media trend, telling The Mirror that she's "not bothered" about the negative comments she received as she "doesn't take social media seriously". She does, however, think that it says a lot about society as a whole, as many have a "warped perception of ageing" thanks to filters and photo retouching.

Kate, 34, said that she had seen someone else do the trend on her for you page, and thought she'd do it with "no make-up" on, and a "bedhead". She said: "One take and really didn't put much thought into it. I uploaded it and then when I checked a few hours later it was already on 300k views! Madness!"

And when the comments came flooding in, rather than being offended, she was "intrigued as the answers were so much older" than her actual age, with some guessing that Kate was in her 50s and 60s - with one even saying she was 70.

Other suggestions included 40s and 50s, however, some guessed between 29 and 33. Many people also commented that Kate has similarities to actress and film producer Drew Barrymore. Someone defended Kate, writing: "Love this. Those who answered 40 and over are about to get a shock when they hit 33-38. Things will happen and change. I also have bags and TONS of wrinkles under my eyes and I don't look 23."

"It made me think how warped our perceptions have become towards natural ageing due to things like filters and cosmetic surgery", Kate mused, saying that she assumed the person who said she was 60 was joking, as she said: " I clearly do not look 60 so I can only presume it was a joke. Faceless accounts of TikTok tend to comment on things just for the sake of it, I guess it's something we just come to expect nowadays."

Kate also reflected on the beauty standards that are set for women, saying that they've "always been so high". She explained: "One comment (by a man) said 'After the age of 25 women get degraded, they need to start having maintenance in order to still look good.' People took it upon themselves not only to guess my age but to list the reasons why I look so old. It's sad that these faceless accounts feel so comfortable tearing people down, I think it comes from a place of insecurity in themselves."
