A mum was left mortified after she accidentally sent an e-invitation to people in her contacts list she didn't intend to invite to her daughter's first birthday party

We all rely so heavily on technology these days, but what happens when the technology we trust fails us, leaving us truly embarrassed and wanting the ground to swallow us whole?

One mum was left horrified after she innocently tried to send an invitation via text to people for her daughter's first birthday party, rather than sending out paper invites. But things went totally pear-shaped when she decided to "import contacts", not realising that she wouldn't be able to choose which of the contacts that the invite went to.

The woman behind the TikTok account @twodachshundkings captioned her video: "If you received an invitation, no you didn't."

The mum explained: "I just made an Evite for my daughter's first birthday party, and on Evite it says 'import contacts?'. And I thought it might import to select through. No, it imported all 487 of my contacts and invited them to this birthday party.

"Not only did it invite my boss, all of my co-workers, all of the people that have ever been stored in my phone, but it sent invitations based on how they are stored in my phone - and I want you to just take a second and think about everyone stored in your phone, and how they're stored in your phone, and then imagine them receiving the invitation."

She then went on to explain that she has someone saved in her phone as Derek, followed by an eye-roll emoji - and he received an invitation with that on it, which could lead to some explaining having to be done. Another name that left people in stitches was 'Jess hit her car in parking lot'. She then joked that she'd have to "get a new identity" due to the technology fail.

In the comments, people said that "didn't understand" how it had happened, and others were sympathetic, saying: "Imagine breaking no contact via Evite", and "Getting second-hand emotional distress".

In a follow-up video, the woman explained that Evite, as a way of compensation, had given her "a gift card for Doordash to use towards feeding people at the actual party", saying that was "pretty sweet of them."

The Mirror contacted Evite for comment and they directed us to a TikTok video explaining that they'd updated the feature to make sure it never happened again. "We listen to our users and we take feedback seriously [...] here's what we did", an Evite staff member shared. They then explained that you're now prompted to "grant permission to share your contacts."

Then, you press "add from phone contacts", and you can manually select who you want to invite, rather than the app automatically selecting all of the numbers stored in your phone. The "select all" button has also been removed. You can then cross-check the number of guests in the top right corner to ensure you're not accidentally inviting 487 people to your party.
