A woman was left fuming after her best friend's kids ruined her new rug and said she shouldn't have to chip in to get the piece professionally cleaned - but not everyone agrees with her
A lifelong friendship is on the brink of collapse - and it's all down to a new rug.
Navigating friendships when kids come into the picture can be difficult for some - as the dynamic can completely change. However, one 27-year-old woman says she's remained best friends with Stella and has looked after her children on 'multiple occasions'.
But, when the woman had invited her friends over for dinner - Stella insisted on bringing both of her kids, even though it was going to be a boozy night with 'adult chatting'. And well, let's just say it didn't end well.
Taking to Reddit, the anonymous woman explained that she let Stella's kids play in the spare bedroom but the mum kept asking people to turn the music and chatter down so the little ones could get some kip. The host also had to order 'kid-friendly food' from Uber Eats so they didn't go hungry - which she paid for.
"I snapped when her two-year-old spilled dip all over our new rug, and (this is where I might be the a**hole, kinda ruined the vibe) and it had just felt like enough was enough," the post reads. "She started out with the whole 'you could never understand because you don't have kids' and I reminded her that it is mine and my partners choice to not have kids, doesn't mean I have to deal with it and pay to get the rug cleaned ourselves (because she's insisting she shouldn't have to chip in).
"A few people chimed in though to say they're just kids and it isn't their fault. But I'm now paying dry cleaning for a rug, and the whole group is really divided."
The woman added that she could have reacted 'better' in hindsight but that it all 'felt like too much' in the moment. She also explained that whilst she doesn't want children herself, she is not 'against them'.
Hundreds of users took to the comments section to express their thoughts - with many siding with the woman and arguing her friend should cough up and pay for any items that have been damaged or need replacing. In fact, nobody seemed to have backed the mother, who was described as 'self-absorbed'.
"Anyone who sides with her should be offering to pay for the rug cleaning," one person wrote. "She should have been the first to take care of that. She doesn’t respect you or your home. Kids do have accidents but as parents we have to be accountable for them."
Another agreed, commenting: "The children aren't at fault, and no-one expects them to pay. It's their pushy negligent mother who is at fault and needs to pay. While a third added: "If she knew that you were inviting other adults and you cautioned her against it, everything following from that is her fault. You apparently went to the extreme of paying for Uber Eats in order to satisfy them, after you said that they shouldn't come in the first place."
