SMSAB Students Depart for Japan's Children Film Festival

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Three students and a teacher from the Sayyidina Abu Bakar Secondary School (SMSAB) left for Japan yesterday to participate in the Asian International Children's Film Festival as part of Japan East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths ( JENESYS 2016), an exchange programme launched by the Japanese Government.

Present to send off the Brunei delegates at the Brunei International Airport on behalf of the Embassy of Japan in Brunei Darussalam was First Secretary Junko Kurihara, as well as officials from Brunei's Ministry of Education, parents and family members of the students.

JENESYS 2016 allows young people to have a look at the 'real Japan' and its cultural, economic and technological features so that they can share what they learn in Japan and promote good ties between the two countries.

The Asian International Children's Film Festival is a three-minute short film competition for children. The awards ceremony will be held on November 26, 2016 in the City of Kitami, Hokkaido, Japan.

Among the participants are teams from high schools, junior high and elementary schools from Japan as well as schools from 15 Asian countries, including 10 Asean members countries, China, Korea, Chinese Taipei and Timor-Leste. According to the Executive Committee of the City of Kitami, the film festival was founded to give a dream or hope to children.

The participating children handle all the things from writing a scenario to editing without any help from 'grown-ups' as much as possible so that they learn about teamwork and the sense of responsibility.
The Bruneian team, which made one entry, will watch films made by other teams and see which team will get what prize during the awards ceremony.

The students will also visit the Okhotsk Floating Ice Museum, experience curling on an ice rink and have meetings and dinner with local people and students.
